Catfish Tackle for Utah Lake
Channel cats, mud cats, and the occasional 20-pounder.
Utah Lake is catfish central. It's shallow, warm, and absolutely loaded with channel cats โ plus a healthy population of bullheads and the occasional blue cat pushing 30 pounds. Here's the gear that puts them on the bank.
The Setup
A 7-foot medium-heavy rod with some backbone. Pair it with a spinning reel loaded with 20 lb braided line. Cats aren't line-shy, and braid gives you the sensitivity to detect subtle bites in muddy water plus the strength to horse a big one away from snags.
Rigs That Work
- Sliding sinker rig: Egg sinker (1-2 oz) above a barrel swivel, 18-inch leader, circle hook. Toss it out, tighten up, and wait. The fish hooks itself.
- Carolina rig: Same idea but with a bead between sinker and swivel for noise. Works well in stained water.
- Float rig: Slip bobber set 3-5 feet deep with a chunk of cut bait. Deadly on summer evenings near the reeds.
Bait
Utah Lake cats eat anything. Best producers: cut carp or white bass (fresh, not frozen), nightcrawlers, chicken liver wrapped in spawn netting, and prepared dough baits. The stinkier the better.
