Pike & Musky Gear for Utah

Yuba, Utah Lake, and the toothy predators that hunt them.

Tiger muskie and northern pike are the apex predators of Utah waters. Yuba Reservoir is ground zero for tigers, while pike cruise Utah Lake's weed lines and backwaters. These fish eat other fish โ€” your gear needs to match.

The Setup

A 7'6" to 8' heavy-power rod rated for lures 1-4 oz. Pair with a 300-400 size baitcaster or heavy spinning reel loaded with 50-65 lb braided line. Add a 12-18 inch wire or heavy fluorocarbon leader โ€” their teeth slice through mono like it isn't there.

Lures That Trigger Strikes

  • Bucktail spinners (1-2 oz) โ€” black/orange or chartreuse. The classic. Cast, retrieve fast, hold on.
  • Glide baits (6-9 inches) โ€” slow, S-shaped retrieve. Triggers followers to commit.
  • Jerkbaits (big, 6+ inches) โ€” twitch-pause-twitch. The pause is when they hit.
  • Topwater โ€” nothing beats a surface strike. Whopper Plopper or big buzzbait at sunrise.

Where to Find Them

Yuba Reservoir: Tigers cruise the rocky points and the dam face. Spring and fall are prime. Utah Lake: Pike stack up in the reed lines and around the Provo Bay inlet. Look for ambush points โ€” weed edges, downed trees, any structure that breaks current.
